Seeing it first will not spoil your enjoyment of the original - in fact, I think the manga version is a lot tighter. Every one of these stories is a banger. Otomo's sci-fi architecture is unstoppable and his characters consistently look really cool. Often the tone is serious and tense, with likable young men going up against advanced technologies and mysterious substances causing instant death. The results are often unpredictable. Those who have seen or read Akira, the author's best known work, will recognize the recurring themes of state-vivisected espers, oppressive highrises and the hairy 70s bums who defy them. The gag stories are mildly vulgar and clever. Particularly memorable is his skewed portrayal of Noah's Ark. Hair is a charming parody of Otomo's own prole-vs-state stories, with some excellent slapstick. "Sound of Sand" begins with a fantastic image and a scary situation, implies a gripping setting and immediately endears us to plucky characters, then ends right when it's getting started.
