Watching Dragonball after DBZ was for me much like when I re-watched Star Trek TOS after watching all the later series. More than worth it, it explains so much, and with eyes unbiased by age the mojo of the original show is far, far stronger than anything that came after. Something to do with inspiration I suppose (and in the case of Star Trek, every single episode of TOS was ripped of by one of the later series to rub it in... ) I prefer DBZ, but to be honest Dragonball is probably better. The writing is amazing, the story twists and turns, and the whole thing plays out much more like the original myth the series is based on (can you smell that monkey magic? ) But as others have said, it is an entirely different show. If DBZ is the only anime you like, you might not be ready for Dragonball yet. Perhaps most interesting though is that Dragonball is where you find Gokus true heroes journey, if we can resort to classic story telling tropes. This explains why the heroes journey in DBZ is reserved for Gohan and Vegeta (mostly Vegeta), Goku is already there.
